North Carolina does not issue a general recreational boating license. However, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete an approved boating-safety course before operating a motorized vessel of 10 horsepower or more.
Carry proof of completion and follow any stricter rental-company requirements. Rules can change, so verify current language with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
Carry an approved wearable life jacket for every person aboard. Children under 13 must wear an appropriate life jacket while a recreational vessel is underway. Boats may require additional equipment based on size and operation.
Check navigation lights, sound-producing equipment, fire extinguishers and the engine cut-off system before departure. Proper fit matters more than simply having jackets stored aboard.
Obey marked controlled areas around marinas, bridges, ramps and other sensitive locations. No-wake operation means controlling speed so the vessel produces minimal wake while maintaining steerage.
Never operate while impaired. Keep a proper lookout, slow down for congestion and poor visibility, and remember that the operator remains responsible for passengers and wake damage.
